| WHEREAS, the Elder Justice Act elevates
elder justice issues to a national level, creates a public-private
Coordinating Council to coordinate activities of all relevant federal,
state, private, and not-for-profit agencies, and provides a consistent
funding stream and national coordination of Adult Protective Services;
and
WHEREAS, the Elder Justice Act establishes a resource center and
library that will improve the quality, quantity, and accessibility of
information on this topic; and
WHEREAS, the Elder Justice Act will develop forensic capacity that
will promote detection, and will train health professionals in both
forensics and geriatrics; and
WHEREAS, the Elder Justice Act will develop increased prosecution
capacity by providing additional resources to law enforcement to support
elder justice cases, and will enhance prevention activities by
supporting community policing efforts to protect at-risk elders; and
WHEREAS, the Elder Justice Act will improve the quality of long term
care in institutions by improving prompt reporting of crimes, by
conducting criminal background checks on workers, and by promoting
accountability through a new federal law to prosecute abuse and neglect
in nursing homes.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Mayor and Council of the City
of Willcox, Cochise County, Arizona, that we join in the support of the
Elder Justice Act, as proposed in Senate Bill 333 and House of
Representatives Bill 2490.
